Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when numerous of them entered the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that such operations become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
