India's capital Rises to Dangerous Smog Post Celebrations

As Tuesday dawned citizens of the planet's dirtiest urban center encountered breathing extremely polluted air that fell into the "alarming" level.

Record-Breaking Air Quality Levels

Various sections of the city showed an AQI above 500, which translates to a tenfold increase over the recommended limit set by the global health authority.

Certain monitoring stations, readings of dangerous airborne particles hit highs of eighteen hundred, representing 15 to 20 times higher than safe standards.

Pyrotechnics Prohibition and New Developments

Beginning in 2020, authorities had enforced a complete ban on the distribution and bursting of fireworks during celebrations due to their substantial impact to the deadly haze that covers the city as winter begins.

Yet recently, the current city leadership petitioned the highest court to seek a modification of the prohibition.

Officials advocated for allowing "green crackers" – historically questioned by environmentalists as being only about 30% reduced emissions – as a middle ground between "heritage and ecological concerns".

Judicial Decision and Reality

Despite concerns of public health and environmental activists, judges complied with the proposal, mandating that green firecrackers could be used during designated periods throughout the Diwali.

During the celebrations, there was widespread flouting of the designated hours across the metropolis, with little enforcement regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the more environmentally friendly variety.

Numerous air quality sensors throughout the capital registered pollution peaking around the night hours to extremely hazardous readings recorded during celebrations in at least recent memory.

Cross-Border Effects

The proliferation of firecrackers during Diwali also initiated a dispute with neighbouring Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistan's Punjab province partially attributing worsening pollution levels in their urban centers on hazardous particles originating in India following the celebrations.

Chronic Environmental Issue

The dangerously high concentrations of atmospheric toxins in the city have remained as a major challenge for over a decade and a half, with the problem showing no improvement.

Near Diwali, the levels of hazardous particles in the atmosphere has been documented to spike to seventy percent above the peak records ever recorded in Beijing, which was formerly considered as the planet's dirtiest urban center.

Various Contamination Sources

This crisis in Delhi is attributed to a convergence of various sources including heavy vehicle emissions, construction debris, building projects, garbage fires and pollutants from crop residue ignition in adjacent states of neighboring agricultural zones.

Within these states, agricultural workers routinely burn crop residue to expedite field preparation, producing toxic haze that then gets trapped over the capital as colder air arrives.

Medical and Financial Impact

Public health and economic impact on the roughly thirty-three million inhabitants living in the metropolitan zone is enormous, according to various investigations.

These hazardous conditions results in increased incidence of neurological, heart and circulatory and breathing disorders, and can even lead to oncological diseases.

Environmental contamination is projected to be accounting for approximately 10k premature fatalities each year in the city.
